Learning how to read and write, five decades into life

Gayle Snowden lived through five decades barely able to read and write.
Now 62, she recently celebrated a milestone: reading a passage of written text aloud to her Salvation Army church group.
She’s been going to classes for about seven years, saying she “never looked back”. Each week, she attends a class in Wellington on Monday, and another class in Porirua on Thursday.
Gayle had used the confidence the programme had given her to join a local community patrol group, she said.
“I’m not getting judged – I can do it. And I want to share that.”
