Te Hui ā Tau (AGM) & National Planning Hui

A brief summary of the 2008 National Planning Hui follows.

 

Aligned to the theme are four strands and these are:  

  1. #26 equals the number of years our organisation has been operating
  2. #26 is affirmation of Article 26, Universal Declaration of Human Rights
    Literacy for All! Tatou, Tatou E! denotes the: 
  3. Sharing of expertise for the benefit of the sector and
  4. Celebrating partnerships.

Each year Te Hui ā Tau (AGM) and the National Planning Hui are attended by members of Ngā Poupou including students, tutors, coordinators, managers, governing committee members and invited guests.

The 2008 Hui was held over three days in Hōngongoi (July) this year beginning with Te Hui ā Tau for Ngā Poupou personnel.

The Student Writing Event began for all students attending. The goal of the Student Writing Event is for students together with the Student Writing Event team to produce a Student Writing Booklet.

The next day the National Planning Hui began. A  day filled with workshops and opportunities to listen to keynote speakers Dr. Edna Tait (TEC Commissioner, UNESCO Sub-committee Chair: Education) and later Hazel Barnes and Ginny Denny of TEC. Meanwhile, students continued with their writing together with support from the Student Writing Event team.  The evening  saw  hui whanau transported to Parliament  Buildings for dinner and a speech from the Hon. Maryan Street  (though read by the Hon. Mahara Okeroa), recognition of Gaye Anstis (QSM), Janice Shiner ex-TEC Chief Executive; and an introduction to Ruma Carrington of BCITO (Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation) to celebrate a new relationship in providing literacy assistance to apprentices to achieve their qualifications.

The next morning began with a panel discussion with the theme: ‘Literacy for All, Tatou, Tatou E’.
 
The panel included:
•    Carla White - Sector Development Manager, Workbase
•    Jeremy Baker - Executive Director, Industry Training Federation
•    Dr Tom Nicholson - Professor of Literacy Education, Massey University
•    Monique Dawson - Deputy Secretary Work Directions, Department of Labour
•    Dr Marion Bowl - Team Leader Adult Education Teaching and Research, University of Canterbury.

The panel discussion was followed by the Student Writing Event (SWE) presentation. A photo slideshow showed hui whānau the students and SWE team at work and six students shared their stories, closing with the waiata, ‘Tutira mai’.
